SainTerre and the Soilet: is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit corporation working to improve sanitation in the developing world. Our sanitation technology is called the Soilet. It is a simple composting unit that connects directly to in-house sewage lines (like septic tanks) or may be adapted for use in rural settings which are scarce in water supplies. Whichever way the system is installed, it’s only bi-product is dirt and water.
Vision: We visualize the transformation of the developing world’s sanitation practices by helping to introduce a revolutionary, cheap, and environmentally sound product to both rural and urban settings. By collaborating with NGOs and multi-national organizations working in sanitation, we envision the rapid dissemination of our innovative and low-cost sanitation technology.
Mission: Our purpose is to provide low-cost sanitation improvements for those who cannot or would not otherwise have access to improved sanitation. By operating in the for-profit sector and by partnering with existing not-for-profit organizations working in clean water and sanitation we multiply the scope and impact of our innovative products and services.
Plan: SainTerre’s plan is to donate Soilets in urban centers on the septic system market, a market that has already been proven in Ghana. Finding social entrepreneurs to take the product to the next level will lead to the new technology being adopted by other companies working in sanitation development. We will build social businesses in a micro-franchising model that takes and spreads the technology through countries. One sale = one donation. By partnering with nonprofits already working in sanitation and hygiene education our technology can be accompanied by established experience in hygiene and sanitation education. Collaborating with and training nonprofits in this way allows SainTerre to focus primarily on finding entrepreneurs and helping them with their business sales while deferring rural sanitation work to established and reputable organizations.
